Getting Digits

This afternoon, I was lucky enough to score a front row seat to a real live meet cute (that movie moment when a future couple first meets).

There I am, reading about the various forms of bodily excretion, hunched over in a way that I would later regret, when a young girl breezes by me and asks the boy at the table over if she can sit down. Let’s call them Elle Woods and Warner Huntington III because it’s fun and also privacy.

So Warner Huntington III immediately strikes up a conversation with Elle Woods. His voice holds a mixture of eagerness and insecurity that leads me to believe that he is interested in her romantically.

I put my book down. My full attention is on the scene.

After running through names, majors, and hometowns, the discussion shifts to sci-fi.

I pick my book back up.

Finally, my ears perk at Warner Huntington III’s unmistakable attempt to get Elle Woods’ digits. It goes something like this:

Elle: Wait, sorry, what’s your name again?

            Warner: You don’t remember?

Elle: Nope. That’s why I asked.

Warner: It’s Warner. I remember yours.

Elle nods with a confidence that one might exude after winning a murder trial in their first year of law school thanks to a basic knowledge of perm maintenance.

Warner: You should really add people to your contacts incase you forget their names.

That was Warner’s big move. It was as much as he was willing to lay on the table—an invitation for Elle to ask him for his number.

And this was her reply:

Elle: Nah, I don’t think it would help.

I am fairly certain that this response was due to oblivion, not rejection, so though Warner eventually left for class empty-handed, I am confident that this was only the beginning of their story.

What should Warner have done differently to get Elle’s number?

I have absolutely no idea and would be doing the online community an extreme disservice by asserting even a speck of authority on the subject.

My sincerest apologies if you were hoping for a how-to blog.

Best of luck!
